Training at the Core of the 2025 Annapolis Nautical Inspector Seminar

21 August 2025

To maintain the highest standards of safety and compliance fleet wide, the Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) Registry hosts seminars, workshops, and professional development opportunities for team members and Registry stakeholders. In August 2025, the Baltimore/Annapolis office hosted a regional Fleet Operations Managers meeting and Nautical Inspector (NI) Seminar for training and professional development. This three-day event brought together regional inspectors and fleet operations leaders, with a strong focus on practical training, collaboration, and reinforcing the high standards that define the Registry’s operations.

During the seminar, inspectors and team members participated in hands-on sessions designed to sharpen their skills and support regulatory and operational expectations. Topics ranged from risk assessment and management in support of vessel operations to vessel-type specific procedures, Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006) complaint handling, and maritime security updates. Inspectors were guided through inspection and crew proficiency assessments and encouraged to ask questions, discuss cases, and learn from each other. The seminar also included role-playing scenarios to reinforce effective communication and support consistency in operations. Scenarios allowed inspectors to gain perspective on other stakeholder’s perception of the inspection process and operational impacts for owners, operators, and seafarers.

In addition to the training sessions, the seminar also offered time for networking, informal discussions, and team building. Participants joined the Baltimore Propeller Clubs’ annual crab feast to close out the seminar.

Regional fleet operations and NI seminars are hosted regionally throughout the year and are more than a team meeting. These seminars are a hands-on learning opportunity for junior and experienced inspectors, technical leaders, and operations managers to ensure that inspections worldwide are aligned with the Registry’s standards, expectations, and evolving industry best practices.
