Panama Canal Expansion: Inaugural Transit Vessel Flies Republic of the Marshall Islands Flag

26 June 2016

Late June saw the neopanamax containership COSCO SHIPPING PANAMA transit the newly expanded Panama Canal. The Republic of the Marshall Islands (RMI) flagged vessel was originally named ANDRONIKOS, but renamed in honor of the hugely expanded canal. COSCO SHIPPING PANAMA set sail 11 June from Piraeus, Greece carrying 9,472 TEUs. The expanded locks are 70 feet wider and 18 feet deeper than those in the original canal. They use less water due to water-savings basins that recycle 60% of the water used per transit.
