Evaluating and Updating the RMI Yacht Code

30 July 2025

The ever evolving and innovative yacht market continues to push the boundaries of design and technology, reimagining yachting for the 21st century. To remain adaptable and flexible, while upholding the highest standards of quality and safety, the Republic of the Marshall Islands Maritime Administrator initiated a review of the RMI Yacht Code (the “Code”).

As part of this review, the Yacht Team drafted proposed updates to the Code, incorporating recent changes in policy and regulatory updates from the International Maritime Organization (IMO), industry trends and best practices, and advances in new and emerging technologies. Maintaining its client-focused approach, the Yacht Team initiated a consultative period earlier this year, soliciting input from a wide range of industry stakeholders on draft updates to the Code.

“We requested input from owners, captains, classification societies, shipyards, and other stakeholders to ensure that the updates meet the needs of the market while remaining firmly rooted in safe yacht operation,” said Marc Verburg, Director, Yacht Operations. “We received valuable feedback and input from our stakeholders, and we’ll consider their input as we finalize the updates to the Code.”

Recent changes to international regulations, new technology, and growing interest among owners to explore previously inaccessible areas of the world have presented unique challenges in the yachting sector.

“It’s an exciting time in yachting. The current challenges created a valuable opportunity for the Yacht Team to review the Code, consult with our stakeholders, and draft updates to remain forward-thinking and solution-driven,” said Jo Assael, Yachts Commercial Director. “We want the Code to remain flexible and adaptable, while protecting the safety of all those aboard, the yacht, and the marine environment,” he concluded.

The RMI Yacht Code was last updated in 2021. The updated RMI Yacht Code is in its final stages of review, with publication anticipated in late 2025 or early 2026
